Threads Image Sizes: The Complete 2026 Guide

Every Threads image format explained — profile photos, post images, and carousels. Exact pixel dimensions and aspect ratios to keep your content sharp on Meta's text-first platform.

Threads is Meta's text-first platform that arrived in 2023 and has grown rapidly as an alternative to X. While it's primarily a text feed, images play an important role in posts — and because Threads shares an image pipeline with Instagram, the same quality considerations apply.

This guide covers every Threads image format in 2026 with exact pixel dimensions and practical guidance.

Why dimensions matter on Threads

Threads crops images to a 1:1 square in feed previews on desktop and shows them at full aspect ratio on mobile. An image designed at the wrong ratio gets cropped in an unexpected way on desktop, often cutting off subjects or text.

Threads also aggressively compresses images below a quality threshold — starting with the right dimensions means the platform's compression has less headroom to degrade your content.

Profile photo — 320 × 320 px minimum

Aspect ratio: 1:1Minimum: 320 × 320 pxRecommended: 400 × 400 px or largerShape: circular crop

Because Threads is linked to your Instagram account, your Threads profile photo is your Instagram profile photo. To change it on Threads, you change it on Instagram.

Upload at 400 × 400 px or larger for the sharpest result across both platforms. The image is always displayed as a circle — center your subject and leave generous margin.

Post image — 1080 × 1080 px or 1080 × 1350 px

Square: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1)Portrait: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5)Max file size: 8 MBMax images per post: 10

Threads supports both square and portrait images in posts. The feed shows a 1:1 square preview on desktop, with the option to expand to full size. On mobile, images show at their full aspect ratio inline.

Portrait images at 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px) show more of the image on mobile, which can improve engagement — the same dynamic as Instagram portrait posts. Square images (1080 × 1080 px) are a safer bet if your image needs to look correct in both the desktop preview and the mobile full-view.

Carousel post images — 1080 × 1080 px

Aspect ratio: 1:1Resolution: 1080 × 1080 px per imageMax images: 10 per post

Threads carousels support up to 10 images in a single post. Each image is shown as a square in the carousel scroll. For carousels, design all images to a consistent 1:1 ratio to prevent unexpected cropping in the inline view.

You can mix landscape, portrait, and square images in the same carousel, but Threads applies a square crop to each for the inline preview — so subject placement in the center of the frame matters.

Common Threads image mistakes

Ignoring the square desktop preview. Threads shows a 1:1 square crop in the desktop feed. A portrait image designed for mobile shows only its center on desktop. If your audience includes desktop users, design with the square preview in mind or use 1:1 as your default format.

Not accounting for the shared profile photo with Instagram. Some users design a new Threads-specific photo and are surprised to find their Instagram profile photo changed simultaneously. The two platforms share the same image. Design with both in mind.

Using low-contrast text overlays. Threads feeds are fast-scroll, text-dominated environments. Image text that works at full screen size can become illegible in the compact feed view. Use high-contrast text with adequate size and keep copy to under 8 words per image.

Uploading carousel images with inconsistent framing. When images in a carousel have different subjects in different positions, the square-crop preview creates an inconsistent gallery feel. Frame all carousel images with the subject centered at consistent size for a polished result.
