Format guide

Which YouTube image size should you use?

Each format shows up differently — here's when to use each one.

Most important

Video Thumbnail

1280 × 720 px · 16:9

The thumbnail is shown in search results, suggested videos, and the home feed. Upload at 1280×720 minimum — use bold text and high contrast since it's viewed at tiny sizes.

Channel art

Channel Banner

2560 × 1440 px · safe zone: 1546×423

Displays differently on TV (full 2560×1440), desktop (2560×423), and mobile (1546×423). Keep all critical content inside the 1546×423 centred safe zone.

Vertical video

Shorts Cover

1080 × 1920 px · 9:16

YouTube Shorts use the full vertical screen. The cover image is shown on the Shorts shelf. Keep your subject centred — the title appears as an overlay at the bottom.

Community

Community Post

1080 × 1080 px · 1:1

Square images for YouTube Community posts. Use these to engage subscribers between uploads — polls, updates, behind-the-scenes shots, and announcements.

FAQ

YouTube image size questions.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube thumbnails should be 1280×720 px (16:9). The maximum file size is 2 MB. JPG is most common, but PNG works fine too. Always upload at 1280×720 — lower resolutions look blurry in the feed.

What is the YouTube channel banner size?

Upload at 2560×1440 px for the best result across all devices. The safe zone — where content is visible everywhere — is the centred 1546×423 px area. Design for the safe zone first, then extend the background to fill the full 2560×1440.

Does YouTube recompress thumbnails?

Yes. YouTube applies JPEG compression to all thumbnails. Upload at maximum quality to retain as much detail as possible after YouTube's re-encoding. PNG files will be converted to JPEG by YouTube automatically.
