Which Instagram image size should you use?

Each format shows up differently. Here's when to use each one.

Most common

Square Post

1080 × 1080 px · 1:1

The classic Instagram format. Works for photos, graphics, and product shots. Safe choice when you're unsure: it never gets cropped in the grid.

Best engagement

Portrait Post

1080 × 1350 px · 4:5

Takes up more vertical space in the feed, which means more screen time and typically higher engagement. Best for portraits and tall product shots. Instagram now also accepts 3:4 (1080×1440), the tallest a feed post can be.

Full-screen

Story / Reel Cover

1080 × 1920 px · 9:16

Full-bleed vertical format for Stories and Reels. Keep key content away from the edges. UI overlays cover the top and bottom 250 px.

Wide format

Landscape Post

1080 × 566 px · ~1.91:1

The widest ratio Instagram supports in the feed. Use for cinematic shots and wide scenes. Everything beyond 1.91:1 gets cropped.

Instagram image size questions.

Square posts are 1080×1080 px (1:1). Portrait posts are 1080×1350 px (4:5), or up to 1080×1440 px (3:4), the tallest Instagram allows. Landscape posts are 1080×566 px (1.91:1). Instagram will compress images uploaded at lower resolutions, so 1080 px wide is always recommended.
Stories are 1080×1920 px (9:16 aspect ratio). Keep important text and faces away from the top 250 px and bottom 250 px: those areas are partially covered by the story UI and swipe-up prompts.
JPG is recommended for photos because it produces smaller files at equivalent quality. PNG is better for graphics, illustrations, or images with text where lossless quality matters. Both are recompressed by Instagram on upload, so the difference in final quality is minimal for most posts.
Instagram supports aspect ratios between 4:5 (portrait) and 1.91:1 (landscape). If your image falls outside that range it gets cropped to fit. Use our presets to avoid this: every preset is within Instagram's accepted limits.
